Strengthening Civil Society for Sustainable Development
The Challenge
African countries have developed robust strategic plans to accelerate socio-economic development, but progress is often hindered by limited resources. To bridge this gap, governments rely on civil society organizations (CSOs) to deliver essential services, strengthen community structures, and support policy development.
However, CSOs face several challenges:
Reduced funding: Since COVID-19, donor and government support has declined, forcing many international organizations to scale back operations.
Resource limitations: Local organizations struggle to access sustainable funding channels.
Systemic and managerial gaps: Weak governance, inadequate financial management, and limited strategic planning reduce organizational effectiveness.
Without targeted capacity-building, these challenges hinder CSOs from achieving their full potential in driving development and improving community wellbeing.
Our Response:
ASD — Academy for Civil Society Development
Through SQILLMATE, SENSAL has developed the Academy for Civil Society Development (ASD) — a digital learning platform designed to strengthen CSOs and social entrepreneurs.
ASD equips organizations with practical skills, tools, and frameworks to plan, implement, manage, and account for resources effectively, ensuring sustainable impact in communities.
ASD principles and tools are simplified and translated into key Ugandan local languages, making them accessible to social entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds.
Through ASD, SENSAL is enabling civil society to:
Deliver essential services more efficiently and sustainably
Secure funding and manage resources effectively
Strengthen institutional governance and operational capacity
Foster collaboration and networks with partners and stakeholders
Drive community development and social transformation
